High Performance Computing at Pomona

Sagehen is Pomona College’s high-performance computing cluster: a campus supercomputer for research and teaching, professionally run by ITS and free for Pomona researchers. When a project outgrows a laptop, it comes here.

What researchers use Sagehen for

Faculty and students across the sciences, social sciences, and humanities, no HPC experience required.

Big data and simulation

Datasets too large for a desktop, simulations that run for days or weeks, and parallel jobs across hundreds of cores, scheduled by SLURM and backed by the BeeGFS parallel filesystem.

GPU computing and AI

Machine learning with PyTorch and TensorFlow, locally hosted large language models for work where data stays on campus, and GPU acceleration for imaging and modeling.

Teaching and courses

Class accounts, browser-based access through OnDemand, and a supported software library (from MATLAB and Mathematica to R, Python, and Gaussian via WebMO) so students compute on real infrastructure.

When a project outgrows Sagehen

For work at national scale, we help researchers apply for allocations on ACCESS, the NSF’s national computing ecosystem, with thousands of additional cores and specialized systems. Start local, scale national.
