Sharing YouTube Videos in Canvas

It has recently come to our attention that beginning September 22, 2025, any existing or newly added YouTube videos embedded in Canvas, may begin displaying ads. Ads are controlled by YouTube and cannot be disabled from within Canvas. These ads can appear before, during, or after videos and may collect viewer information, much as they do when using a link to YouTube itself.

To help protect student privacy and avoid disruption of unwanted ads, we recommend all YouTube content in Canvas be migrated to Kaltura or removed entirely.

If you choose to continue using direct YouTube links and embeds, please consider adding a disclaimer that mentions the ads before the link, embed, or on your syllabus. Suggested disclaimer:

“Some YouTube videos may display advertisements. Theses advertisements are not controlled or endorsed by Pomona College.”
