Denise Machin

Hahn Grant Awardee: Denise Machin, Ph.D., has run Pomona College’s ballroom dance program since 2016. This program is comprised of five Physical Education classes offered every semester, as well as the third-largest collegiate ballroom dance company in the country with over 100 members.
Project Title: Expanding Accessible Dance Pedagogy through Canvas and Video Instruction
Project Goal: This project explores how Canvas can more effectively support embodied, movement-based learning environments through intentional integration of digital instructional materials and asynchronous learning tools. Building upon a previous Hahn-funded initiative, this project will expand and update an existing catalogue of instructional ballroom and social dance videos. A centralized, accessibility-oriented, Canvas-based instructional system, organized by dance style and course level, will make the collection available to approximately 120-160 students annually.
The project will impact six recurring dance courses: Beginning Ballroom Dance; Intermediate Smooth; Intermediate Latin; Advanced Smooth; Advanced Latin; and Nightclub Dance. Students will be able to review materials independently, slow video playback, and revisit movement concepts outside class, supporting student success and accessibility needs. The project also supports inclusive dance pedagogy by allowing students to independently study either role regardless of gender identity or prior dance experience. Lastly, this project will also improve student confidence, preparedness, and retention of embodied movement material outside class meetings.
