What is it?

LUNA is a digital asset management suite to display, manage and preserve all types of digital archive collections.

Why use it?

Digital Preservation: Do you have a collection of cultural artifacts, objects, or printed imagery that needs to be photographed, digitized, cataloged, and made available to the wider scholarly community? Then LUNA might for you.

Image Viewing, Exploration, and Discovery:  LUNA offers excellent search capabilities that are of use for faculty, students, and researchers alike. URLS can be used as citations in scholarly work. Exploration and discovery may extend beyond Pomona to collections hosted at other institutions. There are almost one quarter million images available.

Collection Building: Akin to digital preservation, collection building could include the digitization of academic course materials or inclusion of native digital content for use in course lectures or presentations. Faculty can export high quality images, build PowerPoint files on the fly, or embed content by using LUNA.

Image Presentation: LUNA can be used in the classroom to show images, groups of images, and fine details along with metadata.

The LUNA software is ideal for image files, video files, audio files, PDFs, books and manuscripts in the context of a meta-data rich archive or repository. It is not a file storage platform or video streaming solution.

How do I get started?

Pomona College hosts an in-house instance of the LUNA software. The Pomona instance hosts over 20 collections that span across a variety of academic disciplines. Pomona also hosts several collections for our sister school Scripps College. The Scripps collections are also available to Pomona.  In its totality our instance of the LUNA software makes available for discovery and exploration over 249,000 images!

To browse through and explore existing materials, go to:
(To view the full list of collections you will need be on the 7C network or on a school vpn.)

To add content to LUNA, you must first log in using your credentials.
If you are a new user who is interested in creating and/or adding content, please contact us at to set up a consultation.

For any materials that need to be digitized, we ask that you have a physical copy in your possession. We generally suggest that collections be of at least fifty items. In the past many Pomona collections have been created with the help of grant monies or work study. If you already have digitized content, we can help with adding that to the LUNA system. Please schedule a consultation and we will be happy to discuss all the details.
