Awardee: Jody Valentine studies gender and sexuality in the Ancient Mediterranean. She is interested in the afterlife of antiquity today and how study of the past enriches our understanding of the present. She is currently working on a project titled “What is a Classic?” that critically examines racism in the field of classics by tracing the history of scholarship on the iconic poet Sappho of Lesbos.

Project Title: The Deltos Project: An Online Collection of Accessible and Equitable Resources for the study of Gender and Sexuality in the Ancient Mediterranean
Project Goal: The goal of this project is to design, create, and publish an open-source, online resource center called “The Deltos Project” to support teaching and research on gender and sexuality in the Ancient Mediterranean. This resource center will include various modules (e.g., Topic, Text-Specific, and Theory-Modules) that educators and researchers can use to enhance their courses and scholarly work. The project aims to provide accessible, comprehensive resources that address gaps in existing textbooks and online hubs, and to foster critical conversations around pedagogy in this field.
