SUMMARY:Preparing Documents for Hypothesis
DESCRIPTION:Andrew Wilson is the Director of Research Computing and Digital Scholarship in ITS at Pomona College. Andrew will discuss the basics of Optical character recognition (OCR)\, how to run it on your documents and some of the pitfall and problems you might encounter. Optical character recognition (OCR) is a method of digitally converting images of typed\, handwritten or printed text into machine-encoded text\, whether from a scanned document or a photo of a document. OCR provides a means to make scanned documents and articles searchable by converting them to searchable PDFs. This process is a necessary step for some articles when preparing them for used in Hypothes.is. \nEvent recording:\n \n\n\n Video Transcript Download

SUMMARY:Copyright & Hypothesis
DESCRIPTION:Jennifer Beamer is the Scholarly Communications Librarian at The Claremont Colleges Library\, and the resident expert on Copyright and Fair Use of Library Materials. She will discuss the kinds and amounts of materials that you can use for annotation with Hypothesis within the Sakai platform. \nUnder Fair Use legislation and the Teach Act\, instructors can provide reasonable portions of materials as long as the materials are being used in certain ways. However\, limitations on the ways in materials are sometimes licensed and made available to the libraries by publishers sometimes make the process of getting materials into Sakai\, extremely complex. Jennifer will give practical advise on how to get the materials you need\, and lead participants in a discussion about the legal uses of materials around copyrighted materials\, Hypothes.is and Sakai. \nEvent recording:\n \n\n\nVideo TranscriptDownload

SUMMARY:Collaborative Web Annotation Using Hypothesis
DESCRIPTION:Hypothes.is allows for the annotation of documents and web pages and can be an alternative to online discussion forums. Pomona just integrated hypothes.is with Sakai\, making some of the functionality–such as using the Sakai gradebook and document preparation–easier. \nWe will engage Jeremy Dean and Ryan Comeau of Hypothes.is in a discussion of how collaborative annotation can make student reading visible\, active\, and social. They will also share stories of faculty using annotation-powered reading to empower student writing\, helping students develop these foundational academic skills\, and discuss how collaborative annotation can be used in specific disciplines and with specific teaching and learning objectives. \nThis event will be recorded and is open to everyone—faculty\, and staff across the Consortium—who are new users of Hypothes.is or simply want to learn more about it. \nEvent recording:\n
