Slack – Old

What is it?

Unified chat tool for communicating with teams

Why use it?

Slack streamlines communication, making it a beneficial tool for courses, clubs, and workplaces. It allows users to create multiple channels within workspaces, which is ideal for organizing group communications; its direct message feature enables users to connect one on one. For courses, Slack allows faculty to connect with all students individually or all at once, and students are able to enjoy a class community outside of the physical classroom.

Use case example

Mark Allen, professor of art, incorporated Slack into his pedagogy for the Fall 2020 semester. This allowed him to create a social classroom dynamic that existed online. He created different channels for weekly assignments, which allowed his students to give and receive feedback to and from their peers. It also allowed him, as the professor, to give more casual and conversational feedback to his students.
