Facilitating Online Discussions in Humanities Courses
January 13, 2021 @ 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm
This session features several faculty members in Humanities-based courses sharing strategies on facilitating discussions in digital spaces:
Kara Wittman (English) will discuss collaborative synchronous writing, “microteaching” as a way of encouraging rich discussions and strong community in breakout rooms, and collaborative synchronous student/professor feedback sessions and workshops as a replacement for written comments on written and oral presentations.
Joanne Nucho (Anthropology) will share ways of leveraging the digital platforms to enhance generous dialogue by promoting asynchronous discussion, using small, rotating group projects as a way to create classroom community, and incorporating visual material into class projects.
Carolyn Ratteray (Theatre) will provide tips on how to cultivate and maintain awareness of our 3D body while in a 2D space, and how that knowledge can help lay the foundation for energizing and activating zoom room discussions.
