In 2020, ITS offered funding to support the shift to online teaching and learning through the Hahn Fund. A collaborative effort between ITS and the Dean’s office, the Hahn Fund, was established to support teaching with technology. Over the course of the year, many faculty and teaching staff shared how much the technology implemented during the pandemic enriched their curricula.
This year, we hope to capitalize on the lessons learned during the pandemic and celebrate the return to face-to-face learning in the fall by dedicating a portion of the Hahn Teaching with Technology funds to support course development. The focus of these funds will be to enhance teaching with technology in the classroom.
Funding priorities for the 2021 grants cycle are listed below.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) / Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI)
UDL/DEI projects will work to meet all learners’ needs by applying universal design for learning (UDL) principles and/or diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) practices in the classroom. Some examples of such projects might include:
- Infusing mental health/wellness topics into the curriculum
- Designing anti-racist activities with digital storytelling tools
Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
GIS projects will integrate geographic information systems (GIS), data science and visualization, and other mapping technologies to deepen spatial thinking and analysis. Examples of GIS projects include:
- Utilizing machine learning to analyze satellite images
- Moving existing GIS curriculum to ArcGIS Pro
Augmented Reality (AR)
AR projects will explore applications of Augmented Reality (AR) in education. For example:
- Developing 3D visualizations to expand ways for students to engage content
Open Educational Resources (OER)
These projects will identify open educational resources (OERs) as a way to redesign the classroom experience. Examples of OER projects include:
- Creating online simulations
- Using open/free course content on existing platforms
Domain of One’s Own (DoOO)
Our final funding priority, Domain of One’s Own (DoOO), will offer support to projects that promote online presence, communication and collaboration, and/or digital literacy. Examples might include:
- Enabling students to reflect on their curricular or co-curricular experiences with ePortfolios
- Offering students a range of ways to represent their learning with blogs and/or wikis
Don’t worry if you don’t see your idea listed above! ITS will reserve some funds for technology-enhanced projects that fall outside these categories. If you are intrigued by any of the priorities but not quite sure what they are about or what technologies and techniques underpin them, stay tuned for our upcoming information sessions. These informal information sessions will provide additional details on funding priorities and entertain all ideas and questions.
